ClariFix® Cryotherapy – A New Treatment for Chronic Runny Nose

Do you suffer from a constant runny nose, nasal drip, or the need to clear your throat all day? If so, you may have chronic rhinitis. For many people, sprays and tablets don’t provide lasting relief.

At Hampshire ENT clinics, we are now offering ClariFix® cryotherapy, a new, minimally invasive treatment designed to target the root cause of these symptoms.

❄️ What Is ClariFix®?

ClariFix® is a small cryotherapy device that uses controlled cooling to treat the overactive nerves at the back of the nose. These nerves send signals that can cause excess mucus and congestion. By gently “freezing” them, the device helps to calm the system and reduce symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): ClariFix® Cryotherapy for Chronic Rhinitis

What is chronic rhinitis?
Chronic rhinitis is long-standing inflammation or overactivity of the nasal lining that causes symptoms such as a constant runny nose, post-nasal drip, throat clearing, congestion, and irritation. It may be allergic or non-allergic (vasomotor).

How is ClariFix® different from nasal sprays or tablets?
Sprays and tablets treat symptoms temporarily. ClariFix® targets the underlying nerve pathway (the posterior nasal nerve) that drives excessive mucus production, offering longer-lasting relief when medications have failed.

What symptoms does ClariFix® help with most?
ClariFix® is particularly effective for:

  • Persistent runny nose

  • Post-nasal drip

  • Throat clearing related to nasal drip

  • Chronic non-allergic (vasomotor) rhinitis

It is less effective if symptoms are mainly due to significant structural blockage.

Is ClariFix® surgery?
No. It is a minimally invasive procedure with no cutting, stitches, or tissue removal. It uses controlled cooling (cryotherapy) to calm overactive nerves.

Is the procedure painful?
The procedure is performed under a very short general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic at Hampshire ENT Clinics. Patients do not feel pain during treatment. Mild congestion or pressure afterward is common and usually settles quickly. Often patients feel a slightly extended ‘brain freeze’ feeling.

How long does the procedure take?
The treatment itself takes only a few minutes. Each side of the nose is treated for about one minute. Most patients are in and out within a morning or afternoon.

What is recovery like after ClariFix®?
Recovery is quick. Most patients:

  • Go home the same day

  • Resume normal activities the following day

  • Experience mild congestion or increased discharge for a short period

There is no prolonged downtime.

When will I notice improvement?
Improvement is gradual. Most patients notice symptom relief over several weeks, with continued improvement as the nerve response settles.

How long do the results last?
Many patients experience long-lasting relief (over 2 years). Results can vary, and a small number of patients may require repeat treatment if symptoms recur.

Who is a good candidate for ClariFix®?
ClariFix® is suitable for patients with chronic rhinitis who:

  • Have persistent symptoms despite sprays and tablets

  • Do not have significant structural nasal blockage

  • Want a minimally invasive option before considering surgery

A full ENT assessment is essential to confirm suitability.

Are there risks or complications?
ClariFix® has a very good safety profile. Temporary side effects may include congestion, mild discomfort, or increased discharge. Serious complications are rare.

Where is ClariFix® offered?
ClariFix® is available at Hampshire ENT Clinics, with clinics across Portsmouth, Fareham, Winchester, Salisbury, and the wider Hampshire region.

Do I need a referral?
No GP referral is required. You can contact Hampshire ENT Clinics directly to arrange an assessment.
